Hi guys, welcome to it’s not rocket science five questions over coffee. I’ve got my coffee in front of me here. So I should be enjoying this while so I’m here with Jane Jane bayla. Jane is the smart connector. So we’re going to hear a lot about how she gets people to connect smartly work not only with others, but with her with their business. So I’m really looking forward to the conversation, Jane, welcome to it’s not rocket science, five questions over coffee.

Jane Bayler 1:05

Thank you, Stuart, it’s great to be here. Thank you so much for inviting me. I’m

Stuart Webb 1:09

really looking forward to this. Absolutely no problem. So tell us, Jane, what’s the sort of biggest challenge that your clients face? When you first first start talking with them?

Jane Bayler 1:23

Well, I help I support early stage entrepreneurs. So the big challenge that they have is ending the revenue rollercoaster. Because service based entrepreneurs in particular are very dependent on client revenues. And so getting started, it’s not that easy to achieve consistent, repeatable, predictable, and recurring revenues. So that is the challenge that they’re facing when they come to me,

Stuart Webb 1:51

obviously, and what’s the common mistake that they often find they’re trying to do that without trying to get any help?

Jane Bayler 1:57

Well, I think people don’t really understand how important it is to get systems in place. automated systems that actually support their growth. So one of the first things that I helped them do is obviously they have to, you know, they have to make contact with their ideal clients, and they have to position themselves in a way that is both relevant and compelling. But beyond that, they have to start getting some systems in place so that it’s not just them having to do all the heavy lifting of building relationships and doing all the conversions, they’ve actually got something, or some systems and some automations that help them along the way.

Stuart Webb 2:36

Yeah, you know, key, that sort of thing, isn’t it? Otherwise, everything becomes how many hours you’ve got in the day in order to achieve everything? And yes, don’t sleep, you still need to eat. So if it’s all based upon you, then you can never scale your business. True, absolutely true. And even at those early stages, you need to think about how you’re going to scale and how you’re going to sort of grow the business, don’t you otherwise, it will always remain a hobby, not a business.

Jane Bayler 3:01

Well, you’re so right. And I think that’s something that a lot of people almost get scared to do. But I believe that it’s very important to start with the end in mind and to set yourself targets and goals and actually work back from there. Because you have to know whether you’re trying to build a lifestyle business that just gives you plenty of hours in the day and, and is really run on autopilot, or whether you want to build an empire and actually scale to 10 million or 100 million or whatever. And the approach will be completely dependent on which of those choices you make and where you where you actually set your targets. So I do think that’s important as well.

Stuart Webb 3:44

Yeah, I often find too many people think they’ve got a lifestyle business that then takes up 1520 hours a day, and they wonder why they got into it. And it’s all about whether or not you’ve started the right way in order to grow it to something which can be sustainable with a lifestyle that you want to enjoy. Yeah. Sorry, go Jay.

Jane Bayler 4:02

No, I Well, I was just really going to to actually endorse what you said. Although, that there’s always a bit of pain, I think in the early stages, and I think that’s to be expected.

Stuart Webb 4:13

Yeah, yes, absolutely. Right. And let’s hope that we can minimise it. So what’s that valuable free action or valuable free resource that you want to sort of just describe to the people now to that they can start on that journey?

Jane Bayler 4:26

Well, I do run a free masterclass every couple of weeks. In fact, I’ve got one tomorrow from four till six. It’s the ideal client success masterclass. So it’s two hours of really valuable content, all about how to attract your ideal clients and repel the rest. Because I think that is another mistake that a lot of people make in the early stages is they spend too much time talking to the wrong people who are never going to become their paying clients. So really, the masterclasses is to help them actually start getting those systems in place. That enable them to really start talking to the right people and avoiding and repelling the wrong ones. Because I think that’s absolutely critical. Particularly today, when we can technically reach so many people, we can reach the whole world, obviously, through the internet. So that’s what it’s all about.

Stuart Webb 5:19

Jane, I think that’s absolutely brilliant. You’re absolutely right, the number of people who you spend time with who, who will never ever end up being a paying client or will always take, take take take is the potential downfall of the internet. And I know so many people who when you ask them, so who is your ideal client? They say what anybody? And that’s always the wrong answer, because they will spend a lot of their time talking to people that will waste a lot of their valuable effort. And they need to be much more selective, they need to sort of turn around and go now, I know that you’re the wrong person for me, and I’ve got to work with somebody who’s right. So I think actually having a strategy in place that allows you to repel, as you put it, the wrong people that will never be the right fit for you, is an absolutely winning strategy for any business. I think it’s brilliant.

Jane Bayler 6:10

Thank you appreciate that. Yes, it is it is important, because actually, it’s the biggest profit and revenue drainer that anybody any early stage service based business owner can have. If they were to pick on the number one losing strategy, it will be spending too much time talking to the wrong people. So yeah, it’s there’s nothing more important.

Stuart Webb 6:33

And if you can get that across in two hours, I think you’ve done a brilliant job, because it seems it seems to take many people many, many years to learn. I know it’s something that it’s taken me a long time to learn. So no surprises there. So what’s the contact or book or talk that’s most impacted you and you think is most valuable to pass on to people that listening?

Jane Bayler 6:55

Well, my my very favourite business book of all time, and it To be honest, I think I’m doing it a disservice to actually call it a business book, because I think it’s a manual for life. And entrepreneurship is the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Colby. So that is one of my favourite books of all time. And I just love it because it his integrity shines through, but also his discipline and his clear thinking, and, of course, the habits that he preaches our habits that even though the book was written such a long time ago, they’re so relevant today. So I just loved that book, and I recommend it to anybody that hasn’t read it.

Stuart Webb 7:33

Yeah, I absolutely agree. The key one for that, for me is begin with the end in mind so many people, and we were talking about it, you’re saying we so many people start out without really knowing where they’re going and then suddenly find themselves doing the wrong things. And they have to re engineer everything. And that cost time that cost effort. If you start out knowing what you’re trying to achieve, you know that you want to build a big business, a small business, if you know that you want to work with the right people, and you understand those people that makes your whole journey so much easier. And it’s such why stuff that you put in that book.

Jane Bayler 8:06

Yeah, yeah. And you touched on something really important there about, you know, why make it hard when it can be Well, maybe not easy, but it can be simple. And I always think the thing about having a vision and starting with the end in mind is that it’s like your Northstar, isn’t it I know people use that phrase. But I think it’s very powerful. Because really, when you get up every day, and you say well, what should I be doing today? Of course, you can timetable every single hour of your day. But for most people there are going to be hours when they decide or during the week when they decide, okay, what should I do now? and having that vision or that Northstar if you like, that’s what leads you to make those choices that support that ultimate ambition. So I think I’m with you. I think that’s just such an important principle.

Stuart Webb 8:56

You’re absolutely right. So here’s my get out of jail free card. I’ve managed to sort of put questions to you. What’s the one question that I should have asked you? That I haven’t?

Jane Bayler 9:08

Well, you could ask me why the smart connector? Why did I call my business? My book, my podcast, my facebook group? Where did this neighbour smart connector come from? Maybe?

Stuart Webb 9:20

Well, I want to ask you that. What would the answer BJ.

Jane Bayler 9:24

Okay, so I believe that there is nothing more powerful in business and life though in connection. I’m absolutely passionate about this, this topic. And I think connection exists on three levels. So its connection to self, and that includes connection to a higher power. God if you like then there’s connection to others, which is your interpersonal relationships and how you actually manage them. And then there is connection to many, which is the thing that I monetize commercially, because of course, I’m teaching people to really bring their product and offer and service and so on to many others. But there is an art and a skill and a science in in doing that. And so, you know, connection is is the very thing I think that we all really, you know, we all really need in order to live a fulfilled and a balanced life and also a successful life.

Stuart Webb 10:24

So in these days of when we’ve been so much on the internet, are you finding that people are struggling to understand how to connect across the internet? Have you got tips that you can help them bring to their business enable them to do that?

Jane Bayler 10:38

Yeah, and I do talk about it a lot. Actually, we have a clubhouse room on a Monday night called stand up for your difference rise above the noise. So we talk about this topic constantly. And I think connecting through emotion and stories is absolutely critical. So if you’re talking about a an emotive subject in the third person, for example, if you’re just talking about your opinions, or your ideas, or your sort of intellectualising it, it really doesn’t actually cut through in the same way as talking about your own history, your own story, your own feelings, because people crave that that is what they crave. They crave connection. So I think there’s a lot of, you know, the word authenticity is bandied around a lot, what is actually authenticity? Well, it is the ability to be yourself and actually cut through the noise in a way that resonates with other people. So that thing about authentic connection, it really just means becoming vulnerable, sharing vulnerably being absolutely yourself not holding back. And, you know, that’s very difficult for a lot of people to do, because we weren’t brought up with to connect with people through screens in this way. This is something that is new to a lot of us. So we need to unlearn and relearn, as it was. So yeah, I do help people a lot with that.

Stuart Webb 12:06

Brilliant stuff. Jane, thank you so much, Jane, I really appreciate what you’ve said, I really appreciate the fact that you’d made that that’s so easy to understand.
